Switchbacks and Business Development Plans make building your empire easier

Updated: Nov 19, 2022

Hello Solopreneur Friends! Let's do this!

The early morning Pacific mist made everything dreamlike-slightly out of focus. Somehow, this made the ascent feel easier.

It could have been a straight up lurch, but the designer had taken time to make the 2.5 mile, 1700 feet upward trail challenging, as well as approachable.

I leaned in and lifted my legs one after the other, my lungs heaved. Just when I felt weary, the trail would turn and switchback offering a welcome reprieve.

It wasn’t flat but it was graded in a gentler way that allowed a mini rest before tackling the next steeper section.

This made me think of the value of a well thought out Business Development Plan.

Often when we are doing our day-to-day business, we get saddled with what I call “Asteroid Attacks.” Our day exists of fending off the asteroids or things that randomly come at us one by one. Soon, we lose the broader view.

When we step back and plan, like a well graded switchback on a hike, we enjoy a smoother lurch upward and forward.

Solopreneurs, Entrepreneurs, Founders, How do we make an effective Business Development Plan?

7 steps:

1. Decide your sales goal

2. Define your Target Customer-who needs what you have?

3. Discover how you will connect with them

4. Do some math: Figure out how many customers you will need to reach your goal

5. How much will each customer need to purchase to reach your goal

6. Develop your Customer Connection Plan

7. Devise your Customer Follow up Plan

Each of these steps takes thought and preparation, but it’s worth it. When we take the time to evolve a plan, and take it one step at a time, like a well switch backed hike, we advance our businesses in a more comfortable and fluid way.
